Avocado Green Mattress, a luxury e-tailer that makes sustainable sleep products, has unveiled its new organic cotton mattress pad protector.
“Our mattress pad protector is soft, absorbent and completely non-toxic,” said Jay Decker, co-founder of Avocado Green Mattress and head of customer experience. “It’s a natural alternative to traditional plastic-based waterproof mattress protectors. No polyurethane, spandex, thermoplastic polyurethanes, formaldehyde, PVCs, vinyls, laminates, adhesives, chemical finishes or waterproof coatings are used.”
Made with Global Organic Textile Standard organic-certified cotton ticking and absorbent cotton fiber fill, it is quilted with reinforced edges, a 17-inch cotton pocket and an elastic perimeter.
Decker says all Avocado Green mattresses are handmade at the company’s factory in Los Angeles using nontoxic, sustainable and renewable materials, including 100% natural latex and GOTS-certified cotton and wool.
Avocado mattresses are also Greenguard Gold Certified, meeting super-strict emissions standards including the absence of polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical adhesives or toxic flame retardants.
The company introduced a new vegan mattress in 2018 that is made with organic cotton instead of wool. The mattress is currently available in two versions -- standard and plush -- and features a recycled steel innerspring unit for pressure-point relief and support. The company also sells pillows which are vegan and filled with natural latex and Kapok fiber.
“We are on a mission to provide a healthy, non-toxic, chemical-free sleep environment while promoting green living, human well-being and sustainability,” said Decker.
Avocado says 1% of all revenues are donated to environmental nonprofits. In 2018, it contributed to 12 different national and international nonprofits, including a Women's Center in Rwanda, planting 48,250 trees with the Arbor Day Foundation and 220,00 pounds of food for New Yorkers in need with City Harvest.
